Grassfires

This was my final piece for Communication Design 2. The task was to select a quote / excerpt from a list provided to us and film a type-related piece on the location specified next to each selection. I chose “Grassfires” by Robert Lowell and chose an abandoned lot on 13th Street between 3rd and 2nd Avenue. I recruited friends to help put the piece together while filming the work’s creation from a static location.

We were paired up with high school students from the Essex Street Academy that were studying “cultural identity”. We were asked to interview the students and then create a multi-spread work influenced from the material and the student’s interests.

The task was to create typographic posters for five dates that were significant to us. The one I picked was February 12th, 2009, the day I lost someone really important to me.

A collaborative mural I directed using several pairs of people that interpreted the words ‘Black’ and ‘White’ through paint, publishings and photographs. The piece was a time lapse, and the end result was rather interesting.

Reformation

I wanted the next theme of FW to be quite different from all the other versions in terms of technique and execution. I wanted it to be refined but still carry the tiny quirks that make my designs my own. That’s where Reformation comes in, it’s the first theme for FW that I created as a Parsons student.

Christmas Card for Tyler

First crack using some skills I learned from my first semester at Parsons. Paper boards spray painted silver with a cutout of ‘Tyler’ on the top board. Plastic twine/chord used to keep the two together. I had fun, and I can see why custom punchouts cost a lot of money.
